Born out of a need for weatherproof rainwear with seafaring feel

Whalers Bay was founded by a group of sailors and outdoor enthusiasts who were tired of the lack of durable and eco-friendly rainwear on the market. They noticed that most raincoats were made from synthetic materials that didn’t hold up well in harsh weather conditions and contributed to the problem of microplastics in the ocean. Determined to create a better option, they began experimenting with natural materials, such as waxed cotton canvas, and traditional craftsmanship techniques to produce raincoats that were both functional and stylish.

They tested these prototypes on their sailing trips and outdoor excursions and received great feedback from friends and other sailors, who loved the durability and functionality of the raincoats. Encouraged by the positive response, they decided to start a business that would make these raincoats available to others who valued functionality, quality, and sustainability.

Today Whalers Bay rainwear is known for its durability, style and eco-friendliness, and the company is committed to continue to innovate and bring new sustainable solution to the market.

Name

Whalers Bay is a bay on Deception Island in the South Shetland Archipelago off the coast of Antarctica. Although historically there may be a connotation of whaling in both the name and location, we try to do just the opposite by offering an alternative to disposable raincoats & artificial materials in our clothing, thus limiting microplastics in the seas and hoping to make our small contribution to the sustainability of the marine environment.

Logo

The Whalers Bay navy blue and white logo, symbolizing an anchor, represents the company’s commitment to providing protection from the elements, just as the anchor keeps the ship in place during rough weather conditions. Our products, in the same manner, guard you from extreme weather and keep you dry and comfortable.

Production

Located in Tallinn, Estonia, a city with a rich maritime history and a reputation for unpredictable weather, our production facility is the perfect place to create authentic rainwear. As a historical member of the Hanseatic League, Tallinn’s harsh weather conditions serve as a constant inspiration for us to craft durable and reliable products that can withstand any storm. The city’s maritime heritage further adds to the authenticity of our products.

Materials

Our outerwear is crafted from waxed cotton fabric, a material that has been long-trusted by seafarers for its weatherproof properties. The wax treatment on the fabric creates a water-repellent barrier, while also allowing breathability, thus preventing excessive moisture buildup, unlike other artificial materials. This feature ensures that you stay dry and comfortable on the inside while remaining protected from the elements on the outside.
